New York punk’s spiritual stomping grounds, to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But attendees at the Costume Institute gala at the Met, which this year celebrated “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” did their best to bring the spirit of ’77 with them to the Upper East Side, where some wore it on their sleeves and others in mind-set.I have chosen my favorite outfits.

The Opening Ceremony of the 65th Annual Cannes International Film Festival
Posted on 16-05-2012

Today was the first day of the 65th Festival de Cannes, the international playground of topless starlets, experimental directors, and film-world power players. Many stars have made their debuts there, and the lucky ones — Sophia Loren, Ingrid Bergman, Monica Vitti, Brigitte Bardot, et al — have returned year after year. The combination of yachting, frolicking on the beach, and black tie galas has always provided plenty of opportunities for low-key chic (think Jane Birkin, Charlotte Rampling, or Anita Pallenberg), as well as red carpet glamour (Grace Kelly, Vanessa Redgrave, and Natalie Wood).  Diane Kruger, Eva Longoria and Freida Pinto dazzled on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival’s opening event.

This photo of Grace Kelly was taken on the very same 1955 trip to Cannes where she met her eventual husband, Prince Rainier III, for the first time. She looks elegant and gorgeous–is it any wonder that she nabbed a prince on the trip?

David Bowie, 1978

Jane Birkin, 1974

German actress Diane Kruger wowed the crowds in this pastel creation.

Brigitte Bardot already knows exactly how to play it for the camera, in Cannes back in 1956.

The ultimate European screen star, Sophia Loren shows how it’s done in 1959.

Supermodel Eva Herzigova showed off the Chopard diamond necklace made in honour of the film festival’s ‘face’, Marilyn Monroe.

Monica Vitti and Michelangelo Antonioni, 1967

Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero, 1967

The Help’ star Jessica Chastain chose a sculpted white gown.

Sofia Coppola’s Cannes debut in 1979, atop her dad’s shoulders. Best way to arrive to a party in our books.

Diana Vreeland…Fashion’s FIRST Lady!
Posted on 29-04-2012

The Divine Mrs. Vreeland

Diana Vreeland — tastemaker, magazine editor, Costume Institute institution — was perhaps the city’s most recognizable fashion icon. A look at a life of high style — and high drama.
“ By Eleanor Dwight

“You gotta have style. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it you’re nobody. I’m not talking about a lot of clothes.”
Diana Vreeland

Before coming to the United States, Diana was a society girl Europe. She made a brilliant marriage to a very handsome and successful aristocrat. Through their connections, and because of her inate sense of style, Ms. Vreeland was offered the editorship of Harper’s Bazaar where she worked several years.

Her Amazing style!!!

Try to be born in paris if you can arrange it.” – diana vreeland

Mary Quant, great promoter of the mini-skirt, was given great coverage by Vogue. Ms. Vreeland was freindly with Jacqueline Kennedy. Below, another of Diana’s darlings, Yve St.Laurent with models.

Bring on the British
Later she moved to Vogue, the most powerful fashion magazine in the world. Ms. Vreeland must bear a large part of the responsibility for the “British Invasion” starting in 1964. She adored the Beatles, David Bailey and Jean Shrimpton. She forced the fashion world to sit up and take notice of the Pop Phenomenon: Twiggy. By using her on the covers and in the pages of Vogue she inferred Supermodel status in the British teenager.

Known as DV to those lucky enough to be her friends, Diana Vreland was the epitome of Old World elegance and modern savoir faire. She also had a sense of humor and air of irreverence. She was the tastemaker to the American’s who cared about fashion.

Diana Vreeland’s Quotes:

* Never worry about the facts. Just project an image to the public

* I’m terrible on facts. But I always have an idea. If you have an idea, you’re well ahead!

* Balenciaga did the most delicious evening clothes. Clothes aren’t delicious any more.

* Blue jeans are the most beautiful things since the gondola.

* Elegance is innate. It has nothing to do with being well dressed. Elegance is refusal.

* I adore that pink! It’s the navy blue of India!

* I always wear my sweater back-to-front; it is so much more flattering.

* In a Balenciaga you were the only woman in the room-no other woman existed.

* No one cuts backs like he did. No one knows what a back is anymore.

* Poor, darling fellow-he died of food. He was killed by the dinner table.

* The only real elegance is in the mind; if you’ve got that, the rest really comes from it.

* The two greatest mannequins of the century were Gertrude Stein and Edith Sitwell-unquestionably. You just couldn’t take a bad picture of those two old girls.

* What do I think about the way most people dress? Most people are not something one thinks about.

* Never fear being vulgar, just boring.

* Without emotion there is no beauty.

* The best thing about London is Paris.

Arizona Muse holds strong to the chic model off duty look
A voluminous floral skirt and maxi coat are long on drama.

An oversized coat isn’t overwhelming when cinched at the waist.

A veiled visor definitely falls in the unexpected accessory category.
Anya Ziourova is chic in a cape fur and over-the-knee boots.

Karlie Kloss can do no wrong in edgy leather pieces and a Chanel bag.

Monochromatic red is bold and looks great with a platinum crop.
Emmanuelle Alt shows off her easy Parisian insouciance.

Alaia and a good hat are a solid combination.

A military jacket loses its serious vibe when worn with a feathered fascinator on Anna Dello Russo.

Street style photog Tamu McPherson is a vision in white.

White fringe is an unexpected but of Americana on a luxe ensemble.

Miroslava Duma channels ’90s hip hop in the chicest way possible.

A white buttondown looks fresh with all black with neon accents.

Karlie Kloss’s shearling jacket and jeans are high style without being fussy.

Olivia Palermo shows how chic she can be in the rain with a logo umbrella, leather skinnies and a fur vest.

The coat has it when it’s this detailed.

Daphne Guinness in a rare pants moment.
Karmen Pedaru pairs shearling with studded boots for a major model off duty moment.
Arizona Muse’s chain bag adds a welcome ladylike element to a tough leather jacket and skinny leathers combination.

Rich in color: luscious Tangerine Tango
Posted on 7-01-2012

When Pantone announced that Tangerine Tango was the color of the year I got pretty excited. How an you not love it? It’s beautifully vivid and luscious. Admittedly, in the beginning, I wanted to wear it more than see it in my home. However, I realized that  bold color  tones, including the tango had hold on my design daydreams and just a touch looks modern and fresh.

Yes, Pantone named Tangerine Tango as color of the year for 2012.

Ryan Gosling, the 2011 Coolest Person of the Year
Posted on 15-12-2011

So the 2011 Coolest Person of the Year is a man who is tough but emotional. A movie star who broke up a fight on the streets of Manhattan and was also caught walking down a Manhattan street playing a Strumstick, which is like a ukulele only ukulelier. An Oscar nominee who also smokes, tags graffiti and has a predilection for posing with a fist to the camera but makes dioramas and takes public ballet classes alongside little girls too. He’s the only actor since Andy Kaufman to work as a waiter after making it in show business. One who has a rock band that spent a month accompanying a children’s marionette show in Los Angeles.

Yes, he was a Mouseketeer alongside Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. And yes, he puts on a weird Brooklyn accent even though he’s from Canada. Yes, he was homeschooled and sometimes hangs out with magicians. But he’s so cool, he wears all of that proudly. Even more impressive, he found time to be cool while having to constantly explain to people that, no, the guy they’re thinking of is Ryan Reynolds. Gosling was in four movies this year, yet he didn’t seem overexposed because he was always so different. In Blue Valentine he was desperate, in Drive he was scary, in The Ides of March he was slimy, and in Crazy, Stupid, Love he was six-packy.

“Cool is being comfortable in your own skin. Everything stems from that.” Coolest Person of the Year Emeritus James Franco says, “Ryan is the true king of cool”.
